Hello, I'm Stephanie Winslow. I grew up in Newport and am a proud product of Newport Public Schools, graduating from Rogers in 1999. I have a Bachelor's degree in History from Boston University and a Certificate in Computer Programming from CCRI. Today I work in the healthcare industry as a Data Analyst/ETL Developer.
I’ve served on the Newport School Committee since the infamous Friday March 13, 2020 – the day when Covid19 became very real in RI. Much of my time has been dedicated to our policy and health & wellness subcommittees, promoting equity and student voice. It has been an honor to work with students at Rogers High School on some of this. Incorporating student voice into school decisions is a proven way to increase engagement. Students need to know that they have a stake in their learning.
Additionally, I have witnessed the pain some students and families have experienced in school because of language barriers and microaggressions. I’m also well aware of the trauma and immense social pressures students face. I will continue to help Newport Public Schools build safe, welcoming environments that allow students to reach their full potential.
People are always surprised to hear that I chose to serve on the Newport School Committee. I might not be a parent or education professional, but I am passionate about education policy and the crucial role public schools play in our community.
Public education exists for the greater good of society and needs our support. Dedicating myself to our schools is the best way for me to be part of the solution, to give back, and make a difference where it matters.
I can assure you I am here to serve my community, not myself. I am someone who does the work and takes this role very seriously. I research, prepare, and contribute. It’s as simple as that.
I encourage you to reach out to discuss anything and ask questions. Thank you for being here and staying engaged!
